The Basic Cruising/Crew Standard is a foundational Sail Canada certification that qualifies you to safely act as skipper or crew on a sailing vessel between 6 and 10 metres with an auxiliary motor.

Course Objectives

The primary goal is to develop the skills and judgment needed to cruise safely in familiar waters during daylight hours in light to moderate wind and sea conditions.

Key Learning Areas

  • Boat Handling: Mastering maneuvers under both sail and power, including docking, departing, and tacking/gybing.
  • Seamanship: Essential knots (e.g., figure-eight, reef knot), line handling, anchoring techniques, and winch operation.
  • Safety & Emergencies: Crew-overboard recovery procedures (triangle method), fire prevention, and proper use of safety equipment.
  • Navigation & Theory: Elementary chart work, interpreting tides and currents, understanding "Rules of the Road" to avoid collisions, and reading marine weather forecasts.
  • Technical Knowledge: Detailed boat terminology, including parts of the hull, standing and running rigging, and sail trim for different conditions.

This course is a five day liveaboard and while there are no prerequisites, a general knowledge of keelboats or prior experience is recommended.
