Co-op Boat Program Agreement

The Co-op Boat Program is available for members of the Glenmore Sailing Club. The Co-op Boat Program is a per-person registration program.

Keelboats

  1. Skippers are responsible for the safety of the boat and crew and shall have their Basic Cruising Standard or Keelboat Skipper certification or equivalent.
  2. Crew for recreational sailing are not required to have training beyond a safety orientation from their Skipper. Start Keelboat Sailing or a more advanced course is recommended.
  3. Crew for racing are required to have their Start Keelboat Sailing course or higher level education or comparable sailing experience.
  4. Youth Family Members under the age of 18 may sail with parents / guardians without paying the annual Co-op Boat Fee.
  5. Guest policy in effect.

Dinghies

  1. Skippers are responsible for the safety of the boat and crew and shall have their CANSail 2 or equivalent.
  2. Crew are not required to have training beyond a safety orientation from their Skipper. A CANSail 1 or more advanced course is recommended.
  3. Youth Family Members under the age of 18 may sail with parents / guardians without paying the annual Co-op Boat Fee.
  4. Guest policy in effect.
  5. Equipment storage areas shall be locked when unattended.
  6. Optimists may be used freely, without Co-op Boat fee, by any youth attached to a Family membership.

Guest Policy on Co-op Boats

  1. A Guest is:
    1. an individual not residing in the same residence as a Co-op Boat Program member, or
    2. an individual living in the same residence as a Co-op Boat Program member 18 years of age and older.
  2. A Guest may sail on a Co-op Boat twice before becoming a Club member and a Co-op Boat Program member to continue sailing Co-op Boats. 
  3. Skippers shall provide their Guests with a safety orientation prior to boarding a boat.

Racing

  1. Only paid Co-op Boat Program individuals may sail in Club racing.
  2. The Club reserves the right to add a pickup crew to a racing Co-op Boat so it sails with a full crew (typically this would be adding a third crew to a SanJuan 21 or a fourth crew to a J24).

Everyone

  1. The annual fee is a per person fee that shall be paid in full prior to a member's first sail of the season on a co-op boat. The fee shall be paid by:
    1. youth team participants sailing on the Co-op Boats
    2. members 18 years of age and older who are not a Co-op Boat Guest
  2. A mandatory boat / equipment / rigging / storage orientation is required annually for each boat type before sailing it.
  3. The SanJuan 21 keel must be fully lowered and pinned at all times while sailing (unless grounding requires raising slightly to get free or in between races to clear weeds). 
  4. Members shall ensure their Guests sign a waiver prior to getting onto a Co-op Boat.
  5. Co-op boats shall be sailed in wind speeds lower than 25 km/hr OR 13 knots. The caveat to this is training or Club activities under the direction of a GSC coach / instructor.
  6. Co-op boats are available for use on the Glenmore Reservoir when the City of Calgary Boat Patrol is operating and on the water. 
  7. Members shall not move Co-op Boats to another body of water. 
  8. The Club may move boats to another body of water for youth competition or education.
  9. Members shall launch and retrieve the boat they are using.
  10. Youth under the age of 18 shall be supervised by an adult when using a co-op boat.
  11. Bookings are required in advance by email. There are no defined time periods for usage.
  12. The Boat Inspection checklist shall be completed before and after sailing. Improper storage, defects, missing equipment and damage shall be reported prior to sailing. Members are not charged for normal wear and tear, or minor damage incidental to normal sailing. Co-op Boat Program members are responsible for the care and maintenance of the Club's co-op boats as if it were their own. You are responsible for the full cost of repair or replacement for losses or damages beyond what is previously noted. For minor repairs or missing items, you may be asked to fix or replace items, or pick up parts at approved stores and repair yourself.
  13. If for any reason the boat is not operational at the end of your sail, phone the Club's Co-op Boat Coordinator as soon as possible.
  14. Proof of education / experience or a practical sailing test may be asked of any member before any co-op boat may be used.
  15. Club education, programs, events or other activities may impact access to the Co-op Boats. 
  16. The Club reserves the right to cancel a member's Co-op Boat access for the balance of the season with cause and without refund of fees.
  17. City of Calgary Bylaws must be followed at all times, including wearing a life jacket on the docks and water.
  18. This agreement may be edited from time to time. The version of this agreement here on the GSC website shall be in effect for Co-op Boats Program participants.
  19. Co-op boat usage is on a first reserved basis during general access times.
  20. The following capacity limits shall be followed
    • Optimist - max 2 youth
    • Byte / Laser - max 1 person
    • 420 - min and max 2 people
    • Kolibri - min and max 2 people
    • Enterprise - min 2 and max 3 people
    • 29er - youth team usage only, max 2 people, members only, no guests
    • SanJuan 21 - min 2 and max 4 people
    • J 24 - min 2 and max 5 people
  21. Our Co-op Boats serve many members and programs during the season. Your active participation in the care and correct use of the Co-op Boats is essential. They will withstand a lot of use, but no abuse. 

Release and Waiver

  1. In consideration of the Glenmore Sailing Club allowing me to use the Club's sailboat(s) and sailing equipment and facilities and/or participate in its programs, I acknowledge and agree that the sport of sailing is a potentially hazardous activity which may result in physical or emotional injury, or death.  I acknowledge and agree that I should not participate in the sport unless I am medically able, properly trained and competent in the sport of sailing and I hereby represent and warrant to the Glenmore Sailing Club that I am medically able, properly trained and competent, and that I will wear appropriate equipment including a personal flotation device at all times while on the dock or on the water.
  2. I assume any and all risks and liabilities associated with participating in the sport of sailing and using Club equipment or facilities in connection with such participation, whether racing or not, including, but not limited to, physical or emotional personal injury or death, the effects of inclement weather, failure of equipment, defective equipment, and damage to my personal property or that of others, all such risks being acknowledged and appreciated by me and I agree to indemnify and save harmless the Glenmore Sailing club and all of its officials, employees and volunteers assisting to provide this service (the "Indemnitees") in respect of any and all claims, losses, liabilities, foreseen or unforeseen, arising out of, or in the course of my participation in the sport of sailing or use of club equipment or facilities in connection with such participation other than as a result of the gross negligence of the Indemnitees.  
  3. Furthermore, I hereby, for myself and anyone else who might claim on my behalf, covenant not to sue, and waive, release, and discharge the Indemnitees from and against any and all claims, foreseen or unforeseen, arising out of, or in the course of my participation in the sport of sailing or use of club equipment or facilities in connection with such participation other than as a result of the gross negligence of the Indemnitees.
  4. In light of Covid-19, I also acknowledge and agree to abide by all applicable health and safety guidelines, restrictions, and protocols as stipulated by relevant Federal, Provincial, and Municipal health authorities and governing bodies during my use of the Club's Sailboats. I further acknowledge and specifically agree that the above Release and Waiver applies to any injury or illness I may suffer related to Covid-19.
  5. I hereby acknowledge having read this Release and Waiver and accept its terms and conditions. In the case of sailors under the age of 18, the sailor's parent or guardian agrees to this Release and Waiver, such parent or guardian accepts the foregoing terms and conditions in his or her own right as well as on behalf of the sailor.
