    Time to get the Club and boats and ready for the sailing season.

    Club - everyone meet at the clubhouse. Coffee and snacks available for breakfast and pizza for lunch

    GSC Dinghy Area - follow the lower pathway to the Club's dinghy area

    Work to do includes:

    • Club - yard work (garbage, trimming, raking, pressure wash deck, etc.), cleaning (dusting, windows, kitchen etc.)
    • GSC Dinghy Area - empty storage container (seacan) and sheds and get Club boats ready for the season
    • Pick up San Juan 21's and trailer to heritage park

      - Step mast on the boats and set up for the season.

    • Setting up the tent

    Please bring your work clothes (gloves, etc.) and dress for the weather.  If you have hand tools that are suited to the tasks in your area please bring them.

    Welcome to Calgary's sailing community.

    This is the first course to take when learning to sail a keelboat as an adult.

    Keelboat 1 (Start Keelboat Sailing) develops fundamental keelboat sailing skills in moderate daytime conditions.

    Your self-study pre-course workbook can take up to 3 hours to complete. This is reviewed and marked at the reservoir with your instructor.

    This is a 15 hour course is taught over two consecutive 7.5 hour days at the Glenmore Reservoir.

    • Afloat sessions for this course are aboard the Club's SanJuan 21 keelboats.
    • This course is required to crew on the Club's co-op keelboats. 
    • Student Standard for this Course - this course covers all Performance Objectives of the national standard except maneuvering under power. Outboard motors can not be used on lesson sailboats on the Glenmore Reservoir.

    Keelboat 2 (Keelboat Skipper) expands your sailing knowledge and experience, and adds the skills required to be a successful lake sailor in Calgary - including sailing away from and to the dock and trailering skills (see note A).

    During this course, you are put in charge of the sailboat and crew during all sailing manoeuvers.

    Successful completion requires consistent demonstration of abilities on the water.

    • Course prerequisite: Keelboat 1 (Start Keelboat Sailing).
    • This course is required to skipper the Club's co-op keelboats.
    • These are the Performance Objectives covered in Keelboat 2 (Keelboat Skipper).
    For students panning to continue their education with Keelboat 3, all Basic Cruising Standard Performance Objectives are covered in both the Keelboat 2 and Keelboat 3 courses.

    Michael Turner is an experienced match and team race umpire and active racer. With more than 40 years of experience, he has competed in everything from dinghies to 12m yachts, racing round the buoys, long distance, and offshore. Mike has served on international juries at several World and Continental championships throughout North America including the 2015 Pan AM Games. He has many years of experience chairing protest committees for major local events including Swiftsure International Yacht Race, the Oregon Offshore Race and the Van Isle 360.

    Our skipper will meet you at the dock and have a sailboat ready for you to board. Hop on and enjoy the ride, or roll up your sleeves and be part of the crew. Trim the sails, take the tiller, or just pose for the best selfie of your year. Come on your own or make it a night out with friends.

    Each boat has 3 participants plus our skipper.

    After sailing, head to the sailing club to enjoy a bottle of wine and regale each other with stories about your sailing adventure.

    Come experience sailing with an evening of Boys, Boats and Beers.

    Bring your sense of adventure as you'll be trimming the mainsail, working the jib and taking the tiller on one of the Club's keelboats.

    After sailing... we all head to the Glenmore Sailing Club's deck for beer, a brat on a bun with all the toppings and stories about the evening's sailing while enjoying the sunset over the reservoir.

    Must be 18+ years old to participate in this program.

    Keelboat 2 (Keelboat Skipper) expands your sailing knowledge and experience, and adds the skills required to be a successful lake sailor in Calgary - including sailing away from and to the dock and trailering skills (see note A).

    During this course, you are put in charge of the sailboat and crew during all sailing manoeuvers.

    Successful completion requires consistent demonstration of abilities on the water.

    • Course prerequisite: Keelboat 1 (Start Keelboat Sailing).
    • This course is required to skipper the Club's co-op keelboats.

    Students whose vehicle is capable of towing 2,500+ pounds and who have a 2" hitch ball on a hitch insert with a top of ball height of approx. 17" will be coached on trailering skills.     CANSail 3+ builds on the existing fundamental skills acquired through CANSail 1 & 2.

    Sailors will work to perform in a variety of conditions and situations, and theoretical aspects including racing tactics and strategies will be introduced. This course focuses on advancing fundamental skills for a higher-level proficiency in sailing.
    This is a full day program with a duration of two weeks.

    CANSail 2 is the prerequisite for this course.

    This youth camps runs Monday through Friday both weeks from 9 am until 4 pm. Please drop off and pick up kids within 10 minutes of the start and end times each day. If you need it... before and after camp care is available.

    Welcome to Calgary's sailing community.

    This is the first course to take when learning to sail a keelboat as an adult.

    Keelboat 1 (Start Keelboat Sailing) develops fundamental keelboat sailing skills in moderate daytime conditions.

    Your self-study pre-course workbook can take up to 3 hours to complete. This is reviewed and marked at the reservoir with your instructor.

    This is a 15 hour course is taught over two consecutive 7.5 hour days at the Glenmore Reservoir.

    Course Information:

    • Afloat sessions for this course are aboard the Club's SanJuan 21 keelboats.
    • This course is required to crew on the Club's co-op keelboats. 
    • Student Standard for this Course - this course covers all Performance Objectives of the national standard except maneuvering under power. Outboard motors can not be used on lesson sailboats on the Glenmore Reservoir. 
    • Students achieving all Performance Objectives covered during this course will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Club (not the Start Keelboat Sailing Standard).
    • Instructor Standard (qualifications of instructors for this course).
    • Alberta Sailing Association and Sail Canada Course Levy applied during course registration.

    The Basic Cruising Skills book is optional but HIGHLY recommended. :)

    Students can purchase Basic Cruising Skills at a discounted price when registering for this course. Books will be available to pick up at the clubhouse prior to your course or your instructor will have copies for you the day of your course.

    Revised in 2019; illustrated; 208 pages covering all the skills and language of the rigging and safe operation a sailboat.
